Veracurz Pyramids Itinerary
SEPTEMBER 17 , 2009
This is one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Maya World. Its name means “At the mouth of the well of the Itzá”, in reference to the lands that they inhabit.
It was for some time the most powerful city in the peninsula of Yucatán.
It still has many important buildings. The spectacular Kukulcán Pyramid, stands out: a four-sided building, 98.42 feet tall (30 m), topped by a temple for this god.
In the spring and fall equinoxes the corner of the structure casts a shadow in the shape of a plumed serpent that appears to descend from the top of the pyramid.
Other structures in Chichén Itzá are the Templo de los guerreros, the Grupo de las mil columnas, the Great Ball Court and the Observatory.
The Sacred Cenote, in which Mayan people threw gold, jade and copper offerings to the God of Water, is also an interesting place.
